The Burrhead Puffer, Arothron hispidus, is a large, bold marine pufferfish known for its spiky body, striking coloration, and ability to inflate when threatened. It requires a minimum tank size of 180 gallons, with salinity 1.023–1.025, pH 8.1–8.4, and temperature 75–82°F (24–28°C). Carnivorous and omnivorous, it feeds on meaty foods such as shrimp, squid, clams, and fish, as well as hard-shelled foods to help wear down its continuously growing teeth. Burrhead Puffers are generally peaceful with robust tankmates but can be territorial and may nip at smaller or slow-moving fish. This is an EXPERT-ONLY species due to its large size, specialized diet, sensitive skin, and susceptibility to stress, and it is exempt from any guarantees.
