The Argus Grouper is a bold predatory reef fish native to the Indo-Pacific, commonly inhabiting coral reef slopes, lagoons, and rocky reef environments where it ambushes smaller fish and crustaceans. Due to its adult size and territorial nature, a minimum tank size of 180–220 gallons is recommended. Ideal water parameters are 72–78°F, salinity 1.020–1.025, and pH 8.1–8.4 with strong filtration and stable conditions. Argus groupers are carnivorous, feeding primarily on small fish, shrimp, crabs, and other crustaceans, and should be offered a varied diet of mysis shrimp, chopped shrimp, squid, and marine fish flesh. This species is semi-aggressive to aggressive and will consume smaller tankmates, so it should only be housed with larger, durable fish in aquariums with ample rockwork for hiding and territory establishment.
